With Toyota's recent acquisition of the controls at Fuji Heavy (Subaru), it was bound to happen, just as I hoped and dreamed about, Toyota getting back a little performance flair. Rumors have been circulating about the return of the RWD AE86 coupe, but this news is the most exciting yet.
The new lightweight Toyota sports coupe prototype is based on a smaller Legacy platform, but will most likely be built on the Impreza chassis. The prototype test vehicle features Subaru's 2.0 liter boxer engine but the AWD transmission has no front drive shafts making it RWD. I can't help but think of the older Impreza coupes (think 22B), I see this car as the return of the Impreza coupe just as much as the return of the AE86. It can be badged whatever the helll it wants. Styling won't matter to me either. Just the idea of a Subaru boxer in a RWD Toyota coupe makes me want this thing.
The final powerplant will most likely be a 1.5 liter Subaru flat four powering the rear wheels of this coupe. Keep in mind this car will only weigh about 1100 kg (2400 lbs), so lots of powered isn't needed, but the whole philosophy behind the car is. This car would fill the void that has been left open for so long. A lightweight, RWD, boxer powered coupe from Toyota? I am definitely in. This would be a pretty unique little car. An Impreza combined with an AE86? Helll yes! I would go out and buy this thing tomorrow if gets produced. ej20 turbo swap anyone?
